nelson mandela

 Nelson Mandela

Nelson  Mandela was a leader and a protester who went against  racism.

He was born in 1918 in a small village and died on the 5 of december 2013 at the age of 95 and the cause of his death was prolonged respiratory infection (they are infections that happens in the lungs, chest, sinuses, nose and throat).

Nelson mandela he fought nearly all his life for black people's rights.

When he was 12 his dad died and he was sent to live with his cousin

Who was a tribal chief and when other chiefs came for meetings and stuff he would listen to what they were talking about .

He had learned that the thembu people didn't own their land anymore and he learnt that the white africans mad all the laws and that black south africans were struggling to survive .

So he did a non-violent protest. He went to prison a couple of times because the government didn't like the stuff he was talking about and because more and more people would go against the government but at 1964 he was sentenced to life at prison. when he was in the courtroom he did a powerful speech about his dream

Of a free society where all people were treated the same and had the same opportunities .

While he was in jail a lot of people that were on his side protested because they didn't like him in jail. Finally at 1990 he was let out at the age of 71.

Many south africans were happy and dancing in joy because he was free ,after nelson mandela's release.

In time, new elections were held in south africa in 1994 mandela was elected the first black president of his country. He worked quickly and changed the laws so that all south africans had freedom to live there lifes the way they wished.

Over all Nelson Mandela changed the way South Africa was and never gave up on his dream of a free society.

Slavery

Today I read The Railroad to Freedom by Vanessa York. I learnt that back in 1880 black people were forced into slavery for the white people.

If they denied to go work for the white people they were punished.

They were overworked and could get sold when ever and to who ever.

They were only allowed to get married if their owner said yes

But then that changed they went into protesting and made a underground

Railway ( a underground network that leads them to freedom at the north of America then to Canada) and they succeeded.
